• Rust bleed on the hood or base. Copperfield’s stainless caps shouldn’t rust at the body, but older galvanized Copperfield Standard models do. Rust at the seam means the protective zinc layer is gone and the cap is on borrowed time near the river.
• The cap has shifted off the flue tile. High wind off the East River works mounting screws loose. A cap sitting off-center leaves a gap where rain and animals get in. This is one of the most common failures we see in Financial District co-op and condo buildings.
• You can see daylight through the mesh. Raccoons and squirrels chew through standard mesh. Once the screen is breached, the cap’s spark-arrestor function is gone. Copperfield replacement mesh is a stock item for us.
• Water inside the firebox after rain. If the cap is intact but water is still getting in, the issue is often the seal between the cap base and flue tile. The old mortar or silicone has broken down. We reset the cap and re-seal it with weather-rated sealant.
