Which HeatShield Models This Applies To

Signs Your HeatShield Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Water staining on the ceiling near the chimney chase. This usually means the cap’s base seal has lifted or the mounting screws have backed out, letting rain run down the flue interior instead of staying outside it.
- Rattling or metallic banging during wind events. The locking tabs or clamp band on HeatShield caps work loose over repeated thermal expansion cycles. Once the cap moves, wind catches the edge and it works itself further loose every storm.
- Visible rust streaks running down the flue or crown. Even stainless caps have steel mounting hardware. In the Financial District’s coastal air, those screws and brackets corrode within three to five years if they weren’t marine-grade.
- Debris inside the firebox or at the base of the flue. If the mesh screen has torn or pulled away from the cap frame, leaves, bird nesting material, and pigeon droppings get into the flue. We see this constantly in Financial District buildings with active pigeon populations.
- A cap that’s visibly tilted or shifted from the street. High winds off the Hudson and East River put real lateral load on caps. Once a cap tilts, water entry at the base is almost guaranteed during the next heavy rain.
